Dr. David L. Reed

Associate Provost for Strategic Initiatives


Dr. David Reed joined the Office of the Provost in 2018 as a Provost Fellow. One of his primary roles has been to create a culture of nominating faculty for prestigious external awards through partnering with liaisons in UF’s 16 colleges. This has led to steady increases in such awards university wide. His portfolio also includes the UF-wide initiative in artificial intelligence. Starting in 2020 Dr. Reed helped lead UF’s adoption of AI through AI Across the Curriculum, which today consists of over 200 courses in AI — with over 12,000 students experiencing AI instruction annually.  In 2022, Dr. Reed established the Artificial Intelligence Academic Initiative (AI2) Center to support faculty and students in teaching and learning AI tools. Dr. Reed and the center partner with many support units across the university to advance AI at UF. Additionally, he regularly assists university leaders from around the world on teaching AI Across the Curriculum.

Before coming to the Provost’s Office, Dr. Reed was a Curator and Chair in the Florida Museum of Natural History, one of the top-5 natural history museums in the nation. He began his faculty career at UF in 2004 after received his master’s and doctoral degrees from Louisiana State University. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation for the last 20 years.
