Student success has a new champion at the University of Florida

Dr. Jason Mastrogiovanni will serve as Interim Associate Provost for Student Success, where he will lead university wide strategic initiatives aimed at ensuring students have an exceptional college experience, graduate in a timely fashion and get the tools they need to succeed in life beyond college.

He takes on his new role while continuing in his current position as Senior Associate-In and Director of Academic and Student Success in the Hamilton Center for Classical and Civic Education. He also holds a courtesy faculty appointment with the School of Human Development and Organizational Studies in the College of Education.

“Jason is a talented leader with a great deal of experience developing and overseeing initiatives to enhance student success, and I’m confident that he’ll soar in both of his roles,” said Dr. Angela Linder, interim vice provost for undergraduate affairs.

As interim associate provost, Dr. Mastrogiovanni will oversee UF’s campuswide initiatives for improving student success, including academic support and data analysis, the coordination of academic advising, prestigious awards, McNair Scholars, UF Student Support Services, and ROTC.

He is also expected to move forward with the creation of a university wide Student Success Center, prepare a 10-year strategic plan, and create an organizational structure to promote student success in the Office of Undergraduate Affairs, among other duties.

“As a first-generation graduate from UF, I understand how challenging students can find our very large and complex campus environment,” he said. “I look forward to working to give all of our students the tools to get an exceptional education, have a great experience, and go on to live successful, fulfilling lives.”

Dr. Mastrogiovanni served previously as UF’s first assistant provost for student success. Prior to that, he worked in student success at Texas A&M University, Stony Brook University and the University of Tennessee. His portfolio has included academic advising, prestigious awards, curriculum creation, experiential learning, first-year and transfer experience, student orientation, academic support and intervention, first-generation programs, and the institution-wide coordination of student success systems and strategy.

He earned a B.M. in Music Education from the University of Florida, an M.S. in Music Education from Central Connecticut State University, and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

In addition to his work on campuses, he has contributed to the field of student success by publishing articles on student success, presenting at various higher education conferences, and through the creation of the Texas Conference on Student Success. He also serves on the planning committee for the National Student Success Conference, as the current editor for the Journal of College Orientation, Transition, and Retention and on the editorial board for the Journal of Postsecondary Student Success
