Kristen Stoner
2022-2023 Teacher Scholar of the Year
Dr. Kristen Stoner, Professor of Flute at the University of Florida, has been inspiring students since 2002. A native of Texas, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree, with a certificate in performance, from the University of Texas at Austin. She earned her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Flute Performance and Literature from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She taught at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, for three years before joining the University of Florida faculty.
Since the beginning of her career, she has championed, performed, and recorded the works of women and underrepresented composers. She has recorded many of these important compositions on two critically acclaimed compact discs, Images for solo flute and Colors for solo flute. Her creative work and research have been instrumental in increasing awareness and recognition of now-standard works by previously under-performed composers.
Dr. Stoner has had the opportunity to perform and teach on every continent except Antarctica. She has been invited to perform and/or present at international music conferences and at music conservatories around the world. Her live performances have been viewed online over 250,000 times. In addition to performing internationally as a solo flutist, she is also a composer of original works for the flute family. Her compositions for the flute, piccolo, and alto flute are performed by flutists in solo recitals and at music festivals across the globe.
Recognized as an innovative and dedicated pedagogue, Dr. Stoner meticulously creates individualized lessons for each student, based on their unique learning styles, background, professional goals, and performance ability. Her students benefit from an environment of unconditional acceptance and support, using that safe space as a launching pad to explore new techniques, styles, and literature.
Dr. Stoner resides in Gainesville, Florida, where she maintains a fantastically fulfilling schedule, balanced between teaching at the University of Florida, single parenting her two teenagers, performing in the Ocala Symphony Orchestra, and creating jewelry and original art.
